BINGHAM PARK/SWIMMING
POOL WISH LIST
The Chariton Park and Recreation Board, the Swimming Pool Committee,
and the Chariton Recreation Department have put together and endorsed the following list
of items that they would like to see added to the new aquatic facility and Bingham Park if
funds were available. Early planning discussions included some of these items in the pool
design, but they were eliminated in order to trim overall project costs.
Although the improvements to the surrounding park area were not
included in the new pool plans for various reasons, they are very important to the overall
project. The Pool Committee, the Park and Recreation Board, and the Recreation Departments
all agree that it makes no sense to build a $2 million dollar, state of the art facility,
and have it surrounded by run down and out of date park amenities.
Donations for any of these items will be recognized and graciously
accepted.

ADJUSTABLE BASKETBALL GOALS FOR BINGHAM PARK
Prices for adjustable basketball goals vary widely depending on the
brand and the quality of the product.
Goalsetter Systems, Inc.: The goals that you see in Indianola's city
parks and around Pella and Knoxville were purchased from Goalsetter Systems in Pella, IA.
People that have purchased them say they are very happy with them and they are very
durable. They have a lifetime warranty on everything but the jacks, which have a 3 year
warranty. They are adjustable from 6'-10'
1998 quotes: $1,495 for one; 2 or more $1,345 each
$2,690/pair
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
Although we do not need to install an extravagant playground at Bingham Park, because of
the park's proximity to Van Allen's playground, it would be nice to have a quality, small
scale playground. It would be entertaining for younger kids that are tired of playing in
the water and for children or younger siblings of people playing tennis, basketball, or
baseball.
Prices vary depending on the size of the structure, but nearly all playground companies
offer structures in the $8,000-$15,000 price range.
$8,000- $15,000
SAND PLAY AREA & VOLLEYBALL COURT
The architect's estimates for the sand play and volleyball areas totaled over $80,000
including contractors overhead/profit and engineering fees. The swimming pool committee
felt that these two areas could be constructed much cheaper if the City was willing to do
the work, which for the most part would consist of final grading, hauling in sand, and
constructing some type of frame to contain the sand. The locations, fencing, and rough
grading for each area have been accounted for in the pool design. While the size of the
volleyball court will be somewhat standard, the size of the sand play area would depend on
available funds.
The cost for the volleyball equipment should be minimal, but the play features in the sand
play area could add up depending on what we chose to install. A sand/water play structure
has been very popular at Indianola's pool and would be a nice attraction at our facility.
Sand, final grading, and framing $2,500-$3000
Additional Equipment
Volleyball Net & other equipment
$500
Sand diggers (3) $350-$500/each
$1,050-$1,500
Sand/Water play structure
$3,000-$5,000
Spring Animal riders (3) $500/each
$1,500
$6,050-$8,500
ADDITIONAL SHALLOW WATER PLAY FEATURES
Because of the size of our shallow water (zero depth) area, it may look bare if we do not
add more water play features, plus these features are extremely popular for children too
young to use the water slide or diving boards. There are hundreds of different types of
water play features available depending on what we want to spend. The architect has
recommended that if we want to add play features to the area, we should do it prior to
construction because different fittings are needed for different products.
$2,000- $25,000
ADJUSTABLE BASKETBALL GOAL FOR POOL
Goalsetter Systems also offers adjustable goals for swimming pools similar to the standard
playground goals.
$1,345
SECOND WATER SLIDE (CLOSED FLUME)
The swimming pool committee contemplated a two water slide system, but eliminated the
second slide to lower the overall cost of the project. The second slide was to be a closed
flume slide, meaning that the riders would go through a fully enclosed tube. The tower for
the slide that is included in the plans will be constructed to allow another slide to be
added if funds are available in the future.
$40,000-$50,000
OFF STREET PARKING
Even with our existing pool, it is very difficult to find a parking
spot on busy days. If projected attendance figures are correct, our attendance could
double with the new aquatic facility. This will create a greater need for off street
parking. Busy days also bring about safety issues. When things are congested around the
pool, it is very difficult to see children darting between cars, especially on 14th Street
where cars are parallel parked on the west side of the street and angle parked on the east
side. Off street parking would relieve some of the congestion on 14th Street and Lucas
Avenue.
LANDSCAPING
A little landscaping can go a long way in making a nice looking
facility look even better. Landscaping was not included in the new pool design, because
the committee felt it could be done for much less money by getting local people involved.
